LEMOENFONTEIN PINOTAGE 2011 - Neil Pendock can write about wine, but cannot make it himself. So he and partner Luan asked Donovan Rall to make a Pinotage from very old unirrigated, unprofitable Pinotage from their Paardeberg farm, Lemoenfontein. They used barrels that were thrown out by the Ruperts and very expensive bottles. In fact the bottles were so expensive that a label is apparently not needed. Good, in fact very good Pinotage. Amongst the true comments were: "like a rustic Grenache in character", "best Pinotage 2011 tasted in SA"

MEERHOF WINES - MOUNT ABORA KOGGELBOS CHENIN BLANC 2011 - This oxidative style wine is made from 35 - 45 year old low-yielding dry land bush vines. The grapes were pressed as whole bunches, fermented naturally in used 300 and 500 litres French oak barrels, kept on the lees for 4 months and stirred regularly to enhance the mouth feel and foster a sustained palate experience. Maturation for another eight months in the barrels before bottling. As this is unfiltered wine, sediment may occur. Best decanted and allowed to breathe to ultimately enjoy this mineral driven wine.

MEERHOF WINES - MOUNT ABORA SAFFRAAN CINSAUT 2012 - Pale ruby red with slight purple reflections towards the rim. Clean, moderate plus intensity, first impression is that of a ripe Pinot Noir, yet with aeration no doubt this is as close to the Rhone we will get for Cinsaut in South Africa, intoxicatingly sexy with perfectly ripe mulberries, cherries and blueberry, delicate layers of stony minerals, subtle oaking lending a brush of spices. Dry with red berries follows through, fresh and elegant with moderate plus acidity, lively and energetic in style, delicately juicy with just the perfect tannic grip lending character to the overall structure with a perfect alcohol of 12%.

|
MUSKELJAATKAT 2011 - Harvested from old bush vines on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg. Co-fermented Cinsaut and Grenache. The wine has fresh and juicy red fruits up front with a floral undertone. Characteristic raspberry, red mulberries and cherries with rose petal floral undertone contributing to a fluid, elegant pallet. Grenache expresses itself subtly with blueberries and is more a structural component, responsible for a mineral tightness and a grippy grape tannin structure. This is a good indication of the aging ability of this wine. Serve slightly cool and decanting recommended.
